History

The Foundation was established in 1948 by late Yasuo Shimizu (former President of Shimizu Corporation) as "Shin Jyutaku Fukyu Kai," a Public Interest Corporation chartered by Tokyo Metropolis.

At the time of its establishment, serious lack of housing became a big social problem in Japan after World War U. As defined in the 3rd article of the act of endowment, [The purpose of this foundation is to solve the serious housing problem through comprehensive study of housing construction and implementation of its findings.], the Foundation set their purpose and expanded their business mainly on residential construction and its promotion suitable for the new era.

Subsequently, as the total number of housing units began to exceed the number of households in 1972, the Foundation revised its purpose by restating the act of endowment to [The purpose of this foundation is to solve the serious housing problem through comprehensive study of housing construction, and disclosing its findings and implementation.]. The Foundation also established "Housing Construction Research Institute" within the organization and started the comprehensive research activities of housing.

Furthermore, the name of the Foundation was changed to "Housing Research Foundation JUSOKEN" in 1988 to reflect its full-scale research-based practice. The Foundation was authorized by the Cabinet Office as "General Incorporated Foundation JUSOKEN" on July 1, 2011.

As declared in the articles of incorporation, [The purpose of this Foundation is to promote comprehensive research for housing related as well as human resource development, and to contribute to improve lifestyle by the implementing its findings to the society.], the Foundation has been succeed the will towards its activities.

In addition, the Foundations' activities were awarded for the Prize of Architectural Institute of Japan of 1998 (Specific Contributions Division), the Prize of Architectural Institute of Japan for Education (award for outstanding social contributions) of 2010 and the Prize of Association of Urban Housing Sciences 2012 (prize for achievements).

Annual Priority Theme

Setting theme of the year

A priority subject of the year was set by The Foundation's Research Administrative Committee in order to promote the efficiency in its activities and to consolidate its achievements for housing and living quality improvement.

Grants Programs (publicly offering type)

Research and Practice Grants (1973〜)

The Foundation provides a grant for unpublished study or practice deemed useful for future housing and living quality in order to promote research or practice and to foster researchers in the field of housing.
Applications are accepted on "priority theme" and "free theme" in January each year. Within the range of annual budget for the grant program, the Research Administrative Committee selects studies for programs to be granted, then authorized by the Board of Directors.
(The total number of authorized grants is 1169 cases out of 3271 applications and the grants aggregate up to 2023 is 1,962million yen).

Publication Grants (1986〜)

The Foundation provides partial grants for "publication with highly qualified research in housing related field, which contributes to society and suits for the foundation purpose." Applications for the grants are accepted in August each year, and the Research Administrative Committee selects few researches as candidate for authorization. (The total number of authorized grants is 128 cases amounted to 157million yen, up to 2023).

2.Other investigations and researches

Housing Education Promotion Committee

With the information service of housing education for teachers, including handouts which explains how housing is relating to other subject, the Foundation implements subsidy of 500,000 yen to support house educational practice. Workshop was held for teachers who delivers housing education to the educational front.

Workshop for Community Creation of Rental Apartment

Purpose of the workshops, which is subjected to those apartments owned by the Foundation, is to create and stimulate resident participation to communal activities based on the residents' needs. The workshops are expected to create reliable and safe residential environment and to reduce vacant units for apartment building owner.

Research Committee of Existing Houses Investigation From the book "Shimizu Housing Records" (1935, 1939)

Promotion Services

1.Investigation and research on priority theme

Jusoken Symposium (1981〜)

Symposium is held for researchers, practitioners, and to the public three times a year by collecting research outcome from the annual priority theme contributed to improve housing and living quality,

Publication of Journal (1988〜)

Mainly the lectures given in the symposium held on the annual priority theme are published in the journal "Jusoken Report Sumairon". The Journal is issued once a year in July for researchers, practitioners, and the general public.

Memoirs by the Housing Research Foundation (1974〜)

Commissioned researches are assessed by the Research Administrative Committee and published annually in March as the "Memoirs by the Housing Research Foundation".
*Excluding few thesis, all study memoirs (No.1-48) are scheduled to be uploaded on our website.

E-mail newsletter (2010〜)

The activities of the Foundation are reported four times a year in the newsletter "Jusoken Dayori". Also, event information such as of the symposium is sent out via e-mail, Twitter, and website.

2.Other Activities

Library −collecting housing related books and opening to public−

The Library stores over 20,000 books related to housing. The research papers and documents are widely open to the public; not only accessible by the researchers and the practitioners. Currently, the priority theme−related books and the works of well−known researchers are also available. The library also hold book exhibitions and purchases new books recommended by intellectuals. 3.Publication-related activity

Recognition Services

Yasuo Shimizu Prize by the Housing Research Foundation

"Yasuo Shimizu Prize" was established in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Foundation, to reflect the original intention of its founder, Yasuo Shimizu.
The Prize is awarded to researchers or scholars with the highest contribution to the field of housing research, and "with high potential for leading to a new era or new field in housing research" or "with high potential for immediate social or practical applications. Restarted in 2013, the Prize has been awarded almost every three years. (next award to be in 2025)

The Housing Research and Practice Foundation Prize for Fine Researches

Several fine researches are selected for the Housing Research and Practice Foundation Prize from the research papers using the Foundation grants.

The Housing Foundation Prize for Doctoral Thesis (2015〜)

Several fine doctoral thesis are selected for the Housing Research Foundation Prize.

Other Services

Grants for special purpose (Direct placement type) (2010〜)

Specific objective is determined by the Board of Directors for the grant in the form of direct placement to activities such as administration and maintenance of registered cultural assets related to housing, and reconstruction aid activities in disaster stricken areas.The entrance fees of the symposium is donated to the earthquake stricken areas. Including individual donation from the Foundation, it adds up to 2,050,000 yen.

Housing Rental Business

Rental Housing by Housing Research Foundation JUSOKEN

Since late 1960's, the Foundation has built 3 apartment complexes in Tokyo as practical application of its research. A total of 143 units in the 3 apartments listed below are managed by the Foundation today, and the rental income becomes a part of the activity funds of the Foundation.
